Fuel Analysis

Ensuring the integrity of your fuels is of ever-increasing importance, especially when faced with traditional issues of fuel quality, degradation and contamination combined with modern-day challenges such as monitoring bio-diesel content (FAME – Fatty Acid Methyl Esters), Sulfur content and so forth.

Monition offer a number of comprehensive fuel testing packages, enabling us to isolate common issues that can be extremely harmful to engines and generators, including:

Water

Free and emulsified water are massive risks, with the potential to lead to engine seizure, cause corrosion and bug formation, promote adverse wear and at the very least, affect fuel stability and performance.

Biological Matter

“Diesel bug” as it’s often known is a common term for a number of types of biological growth that can occur in a fuel system. These include  Bacteriological organisms that will consume certain hydrocarbons in diesel, causing degradation of the fuel over time, mould and yeast formation and bio-films that can form, lining  fuel tanks and storage containers.

Asphaltenes

Asphaltenes are a class of compound that, when present, are usually hard, brittle particles that are insoluble in fuel, with an appearance that is often mistaken with bacteriological growth. Whilst small, asphaltenes are not of major significance, however once they begin to form larger particles, they present a severe plugging threat within a fuel system.

Organic Contaminants; Hydrocarbon Waxes, Resins, Gums and similar.

Biodiesel is particularly at risk to oxidation when compared with normal diesel fuel, exposing the user to added risk of fuel degradation, acid formation and breakdown of FAME content to fuel-insoluble organic compounds, all of which can lead to reduced performance, filter plugging or system corrosion. Whilst it introduces a number of new issues, biodiesel is here to stay, so it is vital that these factors are addressed.

Other Sludges and Particulates

Sludges can often be the result of any number of near-endless sources, including dirt, dust and grit, soot from combustion, corrosion/rust and wear particles, all with the same danger: potential to cause even more wear to your engine, injection system or compressor.
