The breakdown of the cellulose-based windings in the solid insulation of transformers give rise to furanic compounds, and therefore act as a good marker of aging or fault conditions.
A portion of the oil sample is collected, with furan compounds separated from the oil using solid phase extraction (SPE). These compounds are then collected and analysed by liquid chromatography using a UV detector.
The concentration of each of the five taget furan compounds (fufural, furfural, hydroxymethyl-2-furaldehyde, 2-acetyl furan and 5-methyl-2-furaldehyde, all in terms of mg/L.
