What is

Project Nautilus?

Project nautilUS is a multi-million pound ATEX certified Non Destructive Testing (NDT) solution for in-service inspection of petrochemical storage tanks.

It also offers a significant reduction in the costs, danger and environmental impact as well as the health & safety risks involved in the periodic inspection of the storage tanks.

As well as offering ease of use and unique movement capabilities, the technology can also be applied for the inspection of ship-borne fuel tanks, transportation tanks and water storage tanks.

To achieve this, Project nautilUS will develop a small intrinsically safe robot to perform in-service inspections.

The bathyscaphic robot will use active buoyancy controls to move around a tank and use an ultrasound probe to make measurements of floor thinning each time the robot lands and record data regarding location for post-processing after the robot is retrieved.

Project nautilUS brings together a multi disciplinary partnership made up of four industry partners and one university, with the experience and expertise to efficiently implement the work in addressing the skills and needs of Project nautilUS, as well as to ensure the long-term sustainability of the project outcomes.

This project is co-funded by the UK’s innovation agency.
